A three week mini-course (January 2016)
Michael Carasik, Adjunct Professor, Jewish Studies Program, University of Pennsylvania, will teach three interactive sessions – a three week mini course. Participants will encounter “the first page” of the Bible, the Mishna, the Talmud, the midrash, and Rashi’s commentary. (All texts will be studied in English.) Each session consists of an introduction setting the historical stage for the text; learning in small hevruta-style groups of 2 or 3, focused on questions posed; and a follow-up discussion of possible answers to those questions and what they tell us about the text. This set of classes is meant to introduce learners to the great Jewish classics and to set them on the road to further learning.
